The steel pattern is formed by crucible reduction of magnetite sand into 4.5% carbon cast iron buttons. These buttons are then layered between bars of antique wrought iron and forge-welded together. The process of adding more cast iron buttons, folding, and forge welding is called the Brescian method. It produces a layered look and a high carbon steel. It is not stainless steel.
